French Ambassador Admits to Oil for Food Payment

A retired French Ambassador admits to receiving a payment from the Iraqi government while he was working for a Moroccan bank trying to recoup some debts Iraq owed to it. Jean-Bernard Merimee was working for the Morrocan Bank BCME at the time. He was already retired by the French Foreign Ministry, but he retained the title of "Ambassador for Life".

When Merimee approached the president of the BCME about accepting debt repayments from the Oil for Food funds the president scoffed. Merimee then set up his own business to insulate the bank from charges of bribery.
